Why SEL Matters in a Bank Street Home/Classroom
In the Bank Street (Developmental–Interaction) tradition, social–emotional growth develops alongside cognitive, physical, and ethical growth. Children learn best when they feel safe, seen, and capable. SEL is not an “extra”—it’s the engine for curiosity, perseverance, and collaboration.
Core SEL Principles (Bank Street Lens)
- Whole Child: Emotions, identity, relationships, and academics grow together.
- Community & Democracy: Every voice matters; responsibilities are shared.
- Learning by Doing: Children practice skills in real situations, not just during lectures.
- Reflection: Naming feelings, strategies, and next steps turns experience into growth.
Daily SEL Routines (10–15 Minutes Total)
- Feelings Check-In (2–3 min)
Use a simple mood meter (colors or emojis). Sentence frames: “I feel ___ because ___.”
Adult move: Validate first (“That makes sense”), then plan (“What might help?”). - Class/Family Meeting (5–7 min)
Agenda: appreciations → problem bucket → plan for the day. Rotate roles (facilitator, timekeeper, note-taker). - Closing Reflection (3–5 min)
Prompts: “A time I helped/listened…,” “Something hard and how I handled it…,” “Tomorrow I’ll try…”
Teaching Emotions: Name → Normalize → Navigate
Tools: feelings posters, mirrors, emoji cards, color zones.
Mini-Lessons (5–8 min)
- Name: “Let’s list 5 words for ‘mad’—annoyed, frustrated, angry, furious, outraged.”
- Normalize: “All feelings are data, not directions. It’s okay to feel; it’s not okay to harm.”
- Navigate: “When I feel ___, I can ___ (breathe, take space, draw, ask for help).”
Micro-Practices
- “Body Signals” scan (tight fists, fast heart).
- 4–4 breathing (inhale 4, hold 1, exhale 4).
- Calm corner with tools (paper, crayons, timer, fidgets, headphones).
Resilience: From Frustration to Strategy
Teach the Cycle: Try → Notice → Revise → Try again.
Language: “Not yet,” “First draft,” “Plan B,” “What evidence do we have?”
Protocols
- Goal–Obstacle–Strategy (GOS):
Goal: “Finish the bridge.” → Obstacle: “It collapses.” → Strategy: “Add triangles; test again.” - Two Compliments & a Push: peers offer 2 strengths + 1 next step.
- Time-Out ≠ Punishment: choose “Take Space” for 2 minutes; rejoin with a plan.
Social Skills: Talk Moves & Conflict Tools
Talk Moves (post on the wall)
- “I agree with ___ because…”
- “I’d like to add…”
- “Can you show evidence?”
- “I hear you saying… Did I get it right?”
Conflict Resolution (3 steps)
- Name the Problem: “We both want the ruler.”
- Generate Options: share, set a timer, swap roles, find a second tool.
- Choose & Try: decide, test for 5 minutes, then check back.
Role Cards: facilitator • listener • summarizer • evidence-finder.
Integrated SEL Activities (Use Anytime)
1) “Weather & Feelings” Journal (Pre-K–2)
- Draw the day’s weather + circle a feeling; add a sentence: “I felt ___ when ___.”
- Targets: emotion vocabulary, cause/effect, daily reflection.
2) “Compliments & Gratitude Chain” (K–6)
- Each person writes a specific compliment; link into a paper chain.
- Targets: community, noticing strengths, positive climate.
3) “Problem-Solvers Club” (1–4)
- Pick a real problem (messy shelf). Brainstorm, vote, test a solution, reflect.
- Targets: collaboration, decision-making, responsibility.
4) “Strategy Menu” Posters (K–6)
- Make posters: Calm, Focus, Try Again, Ask for Help. Populate with student ideas.
- Targets: self-regulation, ownership.
5) “Interview & Empathy” (3–6)
- Interview a partner about a challenge; write a short “How I can support you” plan.
- Targets: listening, perspective-taking, planning.
Age-Band Guides
Pre-K–K
- Time: short bursts.
- Focus: feelings words, turn-taking, picture cues.
- Adult Moves: model self-talk (“I feel frustrated; I’ll breathe”), use puppets/role-play.
Grades 1–2
- Time: 10–15 min SEL + embed in projects.
- Focus: simple problem-solving steps, compliments, apology/repair.
- Adult Moves: sentence frames, visual timers, leadership roles.
Grades 3–6
- Time: longer reflections; peer mediation.
- Focus: evidence-based talk, managing stress, goal-setting.
- Adult Moves: push reasoning, co-create norms, analyze real dilemmas.
Conversation Starters (Meals or Car Rides)
- “When did you feel proud today? What led to that?”
- “Name a time you were helpful—or helped.”
- “What was hard, and what strategy did you try?”
- “Whose idea did you build on?”
- “What feedback helped you the most?”
Sample Week Plan (Plug-and-Play)
Theme: Courage & Kindness in Our Community
- Mon—Feelings Map: draw places you felt different emotions today; share one strategy.
- Tue—Compliment Circle: give/receive specific compliments; post to the wall.
- Wed—Problem-Solvers Club: pick a class/home problem; test a solution.
- Thu—Calm Corner Launch: co-create rules; practice using it before it’s needed.
- Fri—Showcase & Goals: each child shares a growth moment + a next-step goal.
Artifacts: feelings map, compliment slips, problem plan, calm-corner rules, weekly goal card.
Documentation (Fast & Doable)
- Anecdotal Notes: one 2–3 sentence note per child per week (feeling, strategy, next step).
- Quote Cards: capture exact student words; pair with a photo.
- SEL Portfolio Page: monthly reflection: “What I can do now… What I’m working on…”
Troubleshooting
- “Big emotions derail us.” Teach strategies before crises; practice when calm; post visuals; keep tools handy.
- “Kids won’t talk.” Offer choices: draw, act, or dictate; use sentence frames and small groups.
- “Conflicts repeat.” Revisit norms; rehearse with role-play; adjust the environment (duplicate high-demand tools).
- “It feels like fluff.” Tie SEL to evidence: show how routines improved collaboration or task completion.
